A Mouse With Talent
Joe and I went to see ‘The Green Mile’ at the theater— when it was
playing downtown at the ‘Cinniplex’. Of course I’m not sure why it’s
called the ‘Cinniplex’. After all they only have two theaters but that’s
more than most places have in the area so who are we to complain.
Anyway, in the movie there was this special little mouse that made an
appearance and we thought it kind of odd that people would keep a mouse
as a pet. Most people view them as pests— especially the farmers because
if they get in the grain supplies and start making babies... well, look
out. An entire year of work can be ruined. Well, one day we were talking
about the movie when Jeff the milkman, who needed some one-cent stamps
since we had that increase thanks to the Feds, mentioned that HE had a
pet mouse. He said he bought it at a pet store in Yancy’s Pass about 20
miles away. The funny part was that Jeff claims he’s trained the mouse
to do tricks. He flips, he rolls, and he runs on his wheel. Okay, so the
last one isn’t really a trick— all of those "rodent types" know how to
do that. But anyway... Joe and I didn’t believe so he said someday he’d
bring Jacob— that’s the mouse's name by the way— into the office to show
us. Sure enough that mouse did tricks. We got to talking and of course
the topic soon turned to food. Not only did the mouse do tricks but he
also favored a dish called Peach Surprise. Jeff gave us the recipe and I
have to admit... the mouse has good taste... as well as acrobatic
ability. |

Peach
Surprise

4 large ripe, fragrant peaches or nectarines, peeled, pitted, and sliced
neatly into about 8 wedges each
5 to 8 tablespoons sugar
About 1 cup dry white wine (such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, or
Arneis)
4 to 6 sprigs fresh mint or lemon verbena

Layer the peaches or nectarines in an attractive glass serving bowl,
sprinkling each strata with a tablespoon or so of sugar. (Use less sugar
rather than more.) Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 2 to 3 hours.
Taste the peaches for sweetness, adding more sugar as needed. Pour in
wine to barely cover, turning the fruit gently with a spatula to blend.
Cover again and refrigerate 4 to 6 hours. Take the fruit out of the
refrigerator 30 to 45 minutes before serving. Present the peaches by
spooning them and their liquid into wineglasses and finishing with
sprigs of mint or lemon verbena. UB

Lewis are loyal and dedicated Postal Workers that can create a lightly
seasoned, delicately peppered oregano marinara sauce with just a hint of
herbs while eagerly attending those top-secret Postal meetings on the
possibility of a new commemorative collection featuring 'The Dukes of
Hazzard Cast'... Oh what a difference a wacky vacation with Martha
Stewart, Julia Child and Bob Vila can make. Just Kidding Guys...
really... we are. Okay... so maybe we aren't.
