According to the
beauty experts at the Chicago-based Zano Salons, you can turn your
bathroom into a personal spa in a matter of minutes. All it takes are
some inexpensive items, and a little ingenuity...
1. Keep large, thick bath towels laundered and ready for your escape.
They’ll maintain their softness if you only use them for special moments
instead of every day.
2. Light your prettiest candles for a soothing ambiance.
3. Set up a portable stereo with relaxation music, sounds of nature or
classical music. Check out the selection at your local library if you’re
looking for minimal cost.
4. Unplug the phone, turn off any potential distractions and keep lights
to a minimum in the rest of the house.
5. “A box of inexpensive Epsom salts can work magic in the tub, reducing
swelling in your tired feet and relieving your aching back,” Denise
Provenzano, co-owner of Zano Salons, says. “Add eight drops of
aromatherapy oil to the salts before pouring them in and create your own
sensory experience. Aromatherapy oils are available in a range of
prices, but feel free to splurge because each ounce will go a long way.”
6. Provenzano also recommends blending Epsom salts with Kosher salt and
grape seed oil for a simple body scrub that exfoliates and seals in
moisture.
7. Shower massages are an affordable luxury; look for one at your local
discount store. They’re great for washing your hair in the tub, rinsing
your feet after a foot scrub or making an effortless clean up after you
drain the water.
8. Can’t afford a heated towel rack? Toss your towels in the dryer for
five minutes and roll them up in a sheet to keep them warm until you’re
ready to use them.
9. Forget about scrubbing your every inch squeaky clean or eliminating
all evidence of body hair— you’re trying to relax, not stress out. Take
a “functional” bath or shower the next time.
10. Hang out in your private space and do more than just bathe or
exfoliate. Write in a journal, sing, stretch, listen, breathe. If you’re
lucky enough to have the room, set up some cushions and take a nap.
“Your spa escape can take on your own personal style with these
tips and ideas of your own,” Provenzano says. “Pay attention to the
things you like most at your next visit to the spa, and recreate those
aspects at home. If you love a certain fragrance, ask your spa
professional what it is. Many spas offer products that you can hoard at
home for your moments of escape.” Zano Salons has four locations
throughout Illinois. For more information, call (630. 357-4425 or visit
