Meditation
In A New York Minute
by Mark Thornton
Sounds True Books
Hermann Göring famously said that "Whenever I hear the word
culture I reach out for my gun." And when I read the words success,
payoff or prosperity coupled with meditation, Eastern philosophies, or
Buddhism, I, too, reach for my gun. But, being a pacifist, it's a
water-gun." Mark Thornton tells us that, after retiring as interim CEO
at J. P. Morgan, London, "My new career has been teaching major
corporations about finding calm." You're a corporation, you're
flustered, you need peace, he's your man. He bills himself as the
world's first executive meditation coach. "I've spent more than 3,000
hours learning and teaching these techniques in the past year alone,
says Thornton, peace-giver to the driven of Wall Street. What does he
teach? "Calm, bliss, love, compassion." Think of it— you're one of those
corporate types (complete with options and golden parachute) at
McDonalds, Disney, Wal-Mart, General Motors, and the coach is there with
you on the zafu, the two of you in what he calls "hypermeditation."
Executives! Forget those drudge-filled days sticking it to loyal workers
by downsizing the corporation, sabotaging their pension plans, firing
employees of forty years moments before their retirement benefits kick
in. You and your meditation coach can move blissfully together into
beatitude after a busy, cost-cutting day. On the last page of Meditation
in a New York Minute, we are told that Thornton directs a project to
teach and test the bottom line impact to companies on implementing
Eastern techniques to create drive, focus, and productivity
demonstrating our writer's compassion for the balance sheet combined
with a total ignorance of the blessings of English syntax.
In Meditation in a New York Minute, Thornton demystifies
meditation and makes it accessible to all. He presents his complete
program for enjoying the many benefits of meditation— stress reduction,
energy, intense mental clarity— in a New York minute. “If your life is
moving at warp speed,” begins Thornton, “more than ever, you need to
create calm quickly and profoundly.” Meditation in a New York Minute
will teach even the busiest readers— how to get an hour of refreshing
meditation into your day— without adding a thing to your schedule...
Nineteen powerful techniques from the world’s wisdom traditions,
distilled into “micro-doses” you can use between meetings, while
commuting, in the shower— whenever you have a free moment... The 8 Laws
of Super Calm and the 8 Golden Keys for flipping on compassion and
insight in any situation... The 11 Thieves along the path of meditation,
and how to dodge them... “You can be super busy, super successful, and
super calm at the same time,” assures Mark Thornton. With Meditation in
a New York Minute, now the rewards of this centuries-old inner art are
available to everyone on the go.
Thornton explains how he will provide a very practical guide to
meditation and will not say much about the theories or philosophical
ideas behind meditation. He emphasizes that meditation does not need to
be a matter of sitting cross-legged on the floor repeating a mantra to
yourself. You can meditate anywhere, and even people who are extremely
busy have plenty of opportunity to meditate: in the shower, in the
elevator, while walking down the street, eating a meal, or sitting at
your desk. It can be done in many different ways, using breath control,
consciousness of your breath and body, and thought. So this guide is
very introductory and intensely practical. The book is a mere 140 pages
and extremely easy to read and absorb. UB
